PAX05 and other video game goodies

PAX05

4 Color Rebellion have a whole stack of new Nintendo videos from .

The games there are looking stunning. My brother has a Nintendo DS (just for Wario Ware) and initially I wasn’t too impressed, but the more games I see the more I want one. I wasn’t a fan of the Game Cube Mario Kart, but the DS one looks brilliant, I hope the wireless multiplayer works well so that I can whoop him.

Sonic as well, I saw a video of it a few weeks ago and this one isn’t so impressive but it still shows the direction I wish other developers would head. Combining the 2d levels with 3d bosses and hazards is really cool and makes the best of the DS’s capabilities. I just hope the levels aren’t as massive and confusing as they seemed to become after the brilliance of the original. I must admit Sonic the Hedgehog on the Game Gear is one of my favourite platform games ever.

I’m waiting ‘patiently’ for the new Zelda game but Battalion Wars shows there is still quality content to come.

I’m sounding like a real fan boy but head over there and have a look.

Ultimate Spider-Man

Another Nintendo DS game that’s looking very nice is Ultimate Spider-Man. I bought the Spider-Man 2 Game Cube game and played it for a couple of hours. The gameplay was solid enough, and swinging round the city really gave you a sense of speed and height, but it was hugely repetitive and you had to do loads of very similar tasks, between the interesting bits, just to move on (I assume so that was so you didn’t finish the game in a couple of hours). The new version look like it avoids a lot of the previous versions errors, and has gone back to its roots (the comic book).

King Kong

With the new film around the corner the inevitable video game tie in is being created. Normally I’d steer well clear but King Kong is being developed by Ubisoft, with Michel Ancel at the helm. Michel Ancel was the developer behind Beyond Good and Evil one of, in my opinion, the best games ever so King Kong has a lot to live up too. Judging from the gameplay footage it won’t disappoint.

The game does away with some of the traditional video game conventions, for example there is no HUD (heads up display) which you would normally use to check you health and ammunition. You also get to play as both a human and as Kong himself. It looks very cool.
