How do people play games?

January 30, 2006 | Video Games

An interesting experiment to see how people play video games. They used the NES version of Gradius to see what decisions people make whilst playing. The people who played this game are clearly very good at it (at least better than me) and the thing has been presented as a single video with all the players overlaid so that you can see who does what. It looks cool but I lost track of what was going on about five seconds into it.

Movie Roundup - January 06

| Movies

The Terminal

I wasn’t expecting much from this, but simply because of Tom Hanks and Stephen Spielberg figured it was worth a try. The film itself was a quite nice enjoyable simple little movie. Apparently the film was inspired by Merhan Karimi Nasseri an Iranian refugee who has been living in the departure lounge of Terminal One in Charles de Gaulle Airport since August 8, 1988 (apparently he is still there).

Catch Me If You Can

Another Tom Hanks and Stephen Spielberg movie, this time definitely based on a true story. This one felt less right, you have a clearly 28(ish) year old actor playing a 15 year old con artist. The story itself was quite interesting but I couldn’t get over the fact that there was someone in his early teens pretending to be an airline pilot. Tom Hanks was his usual wonderful self.

The Ladykillers

The third, and …

Bubble Blitz Online

January 27, 2006 | Video Games

Something I have wanted to do with Binary Sun for a while now is get some online games. The obvious solution would be to add some games made in Flash, but I don’t like to do things the easy way.

So Bubble Blitz, a downloadable Exe game, is now playable in a browser - assuming of course you use Windows (a Mac version would be lovely though - I’m looking into sorting that out).

igLoader

To get the game into a browser I am using a system developed by Tim over at Indiepath. It’s called igLoader, and will let you play an exe based game in any major Windows browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Opera).

The idea behind using a system like this is to remove confusion for games players. The online game is essentially the same as the downloadable demo and, after installation of the plugin, any game using igLoader …

Tron & Depeche Mode

| Links

I’m not a huge fan of Tron or Depeche Mode, but Michael at Binary Bonsai posted about a fan made video music video featuring footage from Tron with music provided by the band. It’s quite cool, and I know a very big Depeche Mode fan who will at least find it interesting.

The only problem is that nowadays, when someone mentions Tron, I think of this.

Nintendo DS redesign

January 26, 2006 | Video Games

I got a Nintendo DS for Christmas (I’ll talk about it later) but Nintendo are now talking about the redesigned version.

Yesterday they said we wouldn’t see a redesign before E3, today they have released the first information, including images, of the Nintendo DS Lite - a redesigned DS.

Nintendo have gone very Apple with their recent designs (does anyone else thing the new console looks like the Revolution controller?) - I don’t see that as a bad thing.
