New Miniclip website

July 28, 2006 | Miniclip, Web Design

I have been rather quiet on the blogging front recently and there have been two reasons for this. Number 1 - well… see the title of this post, and number 2? I’ll explain that one in a week or so.

Anyway a couple of weeks ago (10th of July 2006) the new Miniclip website was released. For those who don’t know Miniclip is the company I work for, as a web/ game designer.

For the last 7 months we have been working on the design and implementation of the Miniclip site and, as a web designer, I got to do all of the html. Yay!

The design was a collaboration between myself and another designer. Once the layout was decided upon Nic (the other designer) took the lead on styling and fine tuning the design and I got to play with the code. We also built a brand new cms (content …

Legitimate comment spam?

July 26, 2006 | General

I have literally just received some comment spam on my blog. Nothing unusual in this, I get 50/60 comment spams on Binary Moon every day.

What is strange is that it made sense. It was a genuine comment from Channel 4 (a large uk television channel) looking for contestants for a new tv show. It was on a post about game programming despite the comment having nothing to do with game development. It included a name and phone number to use for applications for the show. It was, in short, an advert.

I expect spam from people selling illegal drugs, distributing porn, and selling stolen/ fake goods but a spam comment from a legitimate company advertising a legitimate product? I’ve never seen that before.

Do they really think I’m going to let the comment through? I don’t benefit in any way by letting the comment through and they look like spammers …

Snacksby - like MacGuyver but for food

| Links

I like food and Snacksby makes it easy to use whatever random food you have lying around into something tasty.

Unfortunately the system does not recognise all foods (there are no Super Noodles in there!) but you can add any missing ingredients into the system and hope that someone adds a recipe using them. The fact you can add new recipes and food stuffs means it will keep on growing through user generated content (very web 2.0).

Monopoly replaces cash with credit card

July 25, 2006 | Links

Cool - Monopoly has gone and done, what I think is, an incredibly cool thing. They have ditched the cash for credit cards. Each player gets a credit card and there is a machine that updates transactions as they take place. This removes the counting out your money nonsense and, more importantly, stops people from stealing your money when you go to the toilet.

Please note : I’ve not actually seen this for sale, don’t have a clue how much it costs. Would be interested if anyone else knows.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Movie Trailer

July 24, 2006 | Links

The first film was “Wow”, the second film was “Meh” and the third was “bleurgh”. It looks like the fourth Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film will be all the way back to “Wow”.

The new film is entirely cg and based on the brand new trailer, is going to be wonderful. It looks great, I hope it’s as dark as the first with lots of kick ass combat and cheesy surfer dude wise cracks.

Oh - and let’s hope Splinter’s in there as well.

Edit - Looking at the films on IMDB I have numbers two and three the wrong way around. I could have sworn the time travel one was the second film. I’ve …

9rules dance skills

July 21, 2006 | Links

I don’t dance - full stop. That’s it. Never.

But that doesn’t mean nobody else does.

Yesterday when I posted about the new 9rules website Paul (Scrivs), the CEO, commented saying I should talk about 9rules more cos “they get lonely”. Then yesterday Paul posted a video showing off his dance “skills”, and it was so “good” I thought I would help so here it is.

Go Scrivs!
