Sony have tried it a couple of times with the Net Yaroze on the original PlayStation and then the Linux dev kit on the PS2 but nether really picked up the way you would imagine.
The idea of going back to gamings routes, with people copying endless reams of code from magazines, not understanding what it means and praying that they will get some sort of enjoyable game out at the end, is enticing.
Microsoft have decided it's their turn giving smaller indiependant developers the oppurtunity to share their creations (with the possibility of being picked up for XBLA?).
In my opinion one of the reasons the Net Yaroze was a failure was that there was no way to distribute your creation. There is little point creating a game if nobody can play it but now, with broadband and the high uptake in Xbox Live Arcade, there is the perfect distribution method.
Microsoft wins because they get free content with little to no work. The players win because they get lots of brand new stuff for free. The developers win because they get experience developing for Xbox with the possibility of their game being picked up by Microsoft. Everyone wins! It certainly makes me more interested in picking up an XBox 360.
Rocket Boards is a super fast 3D rocket boarding action. My first "commercial" (shareware) product. Didn't do amazingly well but was a good learning experience
Bubble Bomb is a polished update of a game originally built by Warren Marshal (who works at Epic games - developers of Unreal and Gears of War)
My own update of Bubble Bomb, Bubble Blitz was almost a total rewrite adding loads of new features and a shiny new look.
Seths Puzzle Boxes is a puzzle game with a surprisingly enjoyable story line, unfortunately it's quite short so won't take long to complete, but while it lasts is great fun.
