The reality of beauty

October 23, 2006 | Links

Apophenia recently posted a video, which is actually a commercial for Dove, showing how they made an unremarkable female model into a stunning, if unrealistic, example of womanhood. Check out the video below.

Personally I think it would have been quicker and easier to find a model that looked more like the final example. I can’t see how, or why, they would want to go to so much trouble for something like this when there are more suitable people out there. Of course it does show how much make-up and computers can distort reality - and this is the scary thing.

I am on holiday in Malaysia

October 21, 2006 | Travel, General

The reason for the lack of posts these last few days (you hadn’t even noticed had you - go on, admit it?) is that I am currently on holiday in Malaysia.

As of today I will be off trekking through various remote places in Malaysia so won’t be accessible via this website, or my email, until the start of November. I return on the 31st and will be doing a full write up when I get back, as well as posting some of the many photos I am bound to take.

I actually left england on the 18th, and arrived in Malaysia on the 19th. We spent some of the first day in Kuala Lumpur, going up the Petronas Towers to the Sky Bridge, and visiting the China Town and a couple of the smaller temples.

I’ve not travelled much at all before so this is a great big adventure …

Movie Roundup - September 06

October 20, 2006 | General

For those who are keeping count… there was no movie round up last month. I didn’t have a chance to watch any films :(

I have, however, already seen 3 films this month so the roundup will be back to normal next month.

Regulus 2.2 - now with translations

October 16, 2006 | Regulus

As mentioned a couple of weeks ago I have been workng on an update to Regulus. There are only a couple of small changes to the main Regulus file. The big change is the addition of translations.

Other changes

There have been a couple of other changes. A few css fixes thanks to Alwi and the inclusion of support for the gravatar plugin which you can grab from gravatar.com.

Get it Now

What now!

I have said it before, but this time I think I mean it (I hope). Regulus is now feature complete. There will be no more Regulus updates unless there are any major bugs to be fixed. I will however add new translations if any are sent to me. I want to work on …

walkit and save the world!

October 14, 2006 | Links

Walkit (no that’s not a typo - it’s a name) is a new website that shows you routes to walk from one place to another most efficiently. Currently it’s only for London in the UK but it’s really rather cool (especially since I work there).

The difference between this and something like Google maps is that it shows you the route you can take on foot, ignoring things like traffic and one way streets. It also tells you how much time it will take (at various walking speeds), how many calories you will burn, and how much C02 will not be created because of you.

There’s also a map of the route and written directions.

I like this site and hope it continues to grow.

Eudora to partner with Mozilla (Thunderbird) and go open source

October 12, 2006 | Links

Ars Technica have reported that Eudora (a once popular, mainly with Mac users, email client) will be going open source and basing it’s next version on the wonderful Mozilla Thunderbird.

I wouldn’t normally post about this sort of thing but I know a couple of people who are die hard Eudora users, who hate Thunderbird more than anything.
