The reality of beauty

October 23, 2006 | Links

Apophenia recently posted a video, which is actually a commercial for Dove, showing how they made an unremarkable female model into a stunning, if unrealistic, example of womanhood. Check out the video below.

Personally I think it would have been quicker and easier to find a model that looked more like the final example. I can’t see how, or why, they would want to go to so much trouble for something like this when there are more suitable people out there. Of course it does show how much make-up and computers can distort reality - and this is the scary thing.

The advert is trying to make a point - and is clearly opposed to the way in which the media portrays images of ‘perfection’ via extensive make-overs, special lighting and most importantly - computer manipulation. On the Dove adverts I’ve seen on TV they always try to make a point of the fact that they use ‘real’ women - e.g. women of average appearance and body size/shape. The Dove self-esteem fund is trying to change peoples perception of beauty, so that girls don’t feel inadequate for not looking as ‘perfect’ as the women seen on magazine covers etc.
