In game ads don’t work?

December 28, 2006 | General, Video Games

Advertising in games is something that has been getting a lot of media attention recently. Some reports say that gamers love it, provided things are in context (ads on billboards in a city for example) and, more recently, they say they don’t like it… as mentioned in the report posted on gamesindustry.biz

The audience sampled was only 120 gamers which sounds a little low to me, but the opinion matches those of other gamers I have spoken to about this. My personal opinion is actually the opposite. I am in the “it’s ok as long as it fits” crowd… and this is from someone who doesn’t like advertising in general.

One thing to note with the reports that people like the ads in game is that the surveys are generally performed by companies who run the ads, so naturally they will only publish things that show their services in a positive …

Video Games are good for the brain

December 27, 2006 | Video Games

Just spotted a report mentioned on Yahoo! stating that video games may be good for the brain.

The idea that video games exercise your brain is, I would have thought, obvious but it’s nice to see there is research that confirms my thoughts.

Despite claiming to be an avid gamer there was also this quote from the researcher…

He suggested that somewhere down the road, video games might be tailored to help the elderly keep their minds sharp.

Which seems a little strange considering the massive amount of publicity the Brain Training games have garnered in recent months.

Anyway - I mustn’t complain - I’m just happy that something positive is being said about games, as opposed to the ridiculous news that video games are now being blamed for how people drive! FWIW The suggestion that 15 is too young to drive is something I would look at changing first, personally …

Time in France

December 19, 2006 | General, Travel

A couple of weeks ago I took my girlfriend to Paris for a long weekend away. I would have written about it earlier but two days after returning I went to Turkey (Istanbul) for my Christmas party with work, so I haven’t had a chance until now.

Anyway, it was Jo’s (my girlfriends) birthday so I thought I would treat her to a visit abroad. Jo had never been on a plane before so I decided to fly us there rather than getting the Eurostar. It turned out to be a mistake since our plane was canceled and we had to get one that left 4 hours after hour initial flight was planned to depart.

We eventually got to the hotel to find that the only room left was on the ground floor, and we couldn’t have a key because the last guest had gone home with it. This was resolved pretty …

Text-link-ads on Binary Moon

December 7, 2006 | General

Just over a month ago I added Text-Link-Ads to this website and I have been amazed by the response - not from the people reading my website - they haven’t said a word, but by the huge piles of cash I was sent last month.

Ok… huge piles of cash is exaggerating more than a little bit, but so far I have earnt $350 for adding a few links to my site. That can’t be bad right?

If you haven’t noticed them the ads are in the sidebar on the left, down below the links to Binary Joy. They’re not a prominent part of the page and as such their price is lessened, but I get $60 per link per month that they are on the site, so I am very happy. The ads actually sell for $120 and text-link-ads.com, who take care of the sales and the technology, split …
