One of my work colleagues pointed out this video about the world editor for the forthcoming game Crysis - and I must say - this is incredibly impressive stuff.
I've made a number of editors for video games in the past and they weren't simple to create, yet they are nowhere near the complexity of this one. Clearly the person demoing the editor is very knowledgeable but the ease with which he creates and modifies the environment is astounding, and the fact you can drop into it as a player and run around testing things would ease the development process immensely.
A couple of things to watch out for which are technically challenging, and just rather cool (at least to me), include the real time lighting and day/ night cycles, the landscape sculpting and road laying tools, and the real time physics (on the trees)
Rocket Boards is a super fast 3D rocket boarding action. My first "commercial" (shareware) product. Didn't do amazingly well but was a good learning experience
Bubble Bomb is a polished update of a game originally built by Warren Marshal (who works at Epic games - developers of Unreal and Gears of War)
My own update of Bubble Bomb, Bubble Blitz was almost a total rewrite adding loads of new features and a shiny new look.
Seths Puzzle Boxes is a puzzle game with a surprisingly enjoyable story line, unfortunately it's quite short so won't take long to complete, but while it lasts is great fun.

I totally agree. The Sandbox 2 editor looks awesome and is one of the main reasons I'm looking forward to Crysis.
I was a huge fan of the first Sandbox program. I spent months creating levels for Farcry and actually had one of my maps make it into the unofficial mappack (mp_trade or mp_to_trade).
But one of the biggest things I loved about these editors is the ability to just jump right into the level and test it out. It reminded me of the Duke Nukem 3d "Build" level editor. It makes level editing a lot more fun and easy.
This is a madly powerful program. I wish I had time to do stuff like this, especially to fiddle with NWNs Aurora Toolset.
