Acrobots - flash toy

April 28, 2007 | Links

A quick link with something for you to play with. Acrobots is totally pointless but also a great waste of time.

The way the little creatures grab on to any surface they can, and the way they reach for each other as they fall is wonderful to watch. I like to add loads of the acrobots together and then watch as they jump and climb over themselves trying to hold as many hands as possible.

I’m sure that it’s all technically quite simple stuff, but it looks so natural that you can’t help but wonder at the cleverness, and simplicity of it. It fascinates me far more than it should.

Slow posting on Binary Moon - I now have a Wii

April 24, 2007 | General

Posting here is going to slow down for the next week or two. I have finally managed to get hold of a Nintendo Wii (only 6 months after launch) and will be playing that for the next week or two. I wish to complete the new Legend of Zelda game - the Twiglight Princess, which I have been waiting for for the last few years.

I actually have a few things to talk about as well. I saw the Ninja Turtles film so want to do a review (will do one later, Zelda comes first) and I have a few articles I have started which will now have to wait a while longer. I’ll be reviewing Zelda (and the Wii) as well, but those will likely be posted on Binary Joy. I will probably post the occasional link post in my lunch break at work, but for now …

The Virginia Tech tragedy and violent video games

April 21, 2007 | Video Games, General

The recent shooting at Virginia Tech has affected, and shocked, many people and it’s a terrible tragedy that something so awful could happen. My thoughts go out to all those involved and I hope they can get back to some semblance of normality as soon as possible.

Video Games

As tragic as this event was video games are yet again being blamed for the issue. Within hours of the incident Jack Thompson had managed to get onto the television, under the guise of an “expert”, and tell people exactly what had happened, despite having no direct knowledge of the incident, and the name of the shooter being unknown. A few hours after the show Kotaku posted a dissection of Jacks ravings showing that the things he said have little basis in fact and are pure sensationalism.

Since then Jack has blamed Bill Gates for the atrocity (a person who …

Opera and Flash 7 on the Wii

April 20, 2007 | Links

The official version of Opera for the Wii has now been released, it’s out of beta, and in a couple of months Nintendo are going to start charging for the browser - so naturally you want it to work properly yeah?

Opera have recently explained why the browser only supports Flash version 7 and it’s not for the sort of reasons you would expect. Basically Adobe, the company that owns Flash, have only provided an SDK (software development kit) for the latest version of Flash (currently at version 9), for Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. The SDK for other devices, such as mobile phones and the Nintendo Wii only covers Flash 7 - so until it’s updated we are stuck with old versions of Flash.

However there is something you can do try and remedy the situation. You can contact Adobe, via this handy online form, and ask them to create …

Penn and Teller on Creationism: Bullshit

April 7, 2007 | Links

Found this on Webnv.net today.

Intelligent Design

Evolution is a theory not a fact, regarding the origin of living things. This material should be approached with an open mind, studied carefully, and critically considered.

Reality

Intelligent design isn’t validated by any science or anything, we just made it up

Personally I still think that the FSMism folks have it right.

300 + Paulo = Xerxes?

April 5, 2007 | Reviews, Movies

I went to see 300 at the Imax cinema in London recently and it is one of the best films I have seen in a long time. I like powerful films and, whilst the story was a little thin, this film was VERY powerful.

Nobody goes to see a film like 300 for the story, but what there was of it was done more than well enough. For those who aren’t aware (and I’m late to the party so you must have read about it elsewhere) 300 covers the battle of Thermapolae in which 300 Spartans stood again the millions of the Persian army.

This film is pure popcorn fantasy - it’s wonderful to look at and, like Sin City before it, follows it’s source material, a comic book by Frank Miller, very closely. Also like Sin City the movie was filmed largely on Blue Screen with the …
