Opera and Flash 7 on the Wii

April 20, 2007 | Links

The official version of Opera for the Wii has now been released, it’s out of beta, and in a couple of months Nintendo are going to start charging for the browser - so naturally you want it to work properly yeah?

Opera have recently explained why the browser only supports Flash version 7 and it’s not for the sort of reasons you would expect. Basically Adobe, the company that owns Flash, have only provided an SDK (software development kit) for the latest version of Flash (currently at version 9), for Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. The SDK for other devices, such as mobile phones and the Nintendo Wii only covers Flash 7 - so until it’s updated we are stuck with old versions of Flash.

However there is something you can do try and remedy the situation. You can contact Adobe, via this handy online form, and ask them to create an SDK for non computer based devices for Flash 8+ - and maybe then we can get a fully working browser.
