WordPress tips and tricks - custom templates

June 30, 2007 | Web Design

Some time ago I posted the first of my tips and tricks for Wordpress, and I thought it was about time I posted some more so, to start things off, here is a short tutorial on custom page templates in Wordpress.

Custom page templates are very much an underused part of the Wordpress software yet they can do some very powerful things. Basically you can create a new template file and then use that to display Wordpress pages in a totally different way to normal, adding whatever extra features you desire. An example of a custom page on Binary Moon would be the Archives page (I need to rejig my archives, they are getting rather long).

Creating a page template is very easy indeed - all you need to do is create a new template file (I tend to copy an existing page template) and add a tiny …

Wooden, Binary calculator

June 28, 2007 | Links

I bought a binary clock once because I thought it was cool. I got it from Think Geek for about $15, but little did I realise that the tax that I would have to pay would double the price. A friend at work also bought one, and we set his up in the office. First we had to get an American to English plug adaptor, and then we used it… and it started smoking and then stopped working. I didn’t use my clock in the end.

Anyway the only reason I thought of this wonderful little story is that I found this funky wooden, binary calculator today.

The calculator is a little wooden machine that lets you add numbers with marbles. Obviously it’s kind of redundant what with computers and, well, real calculators, but I think it’s rather cool - and would be a good way to teach binary to those …

Your online neighbourhood

June 25, 2007 | Links

Was aimlessly browsing today and stumbled upon this interesting post from blog-op.com - check out your neighbors.

Basically he mentions a website called myIPneighbours.com where you can find out the websites that are running off of the same shared server that you run on.

In the interest of sharing some link love, and helping out the others in my neighborhood, my IP neighbors are linked below.

Anybody have any unexpected/ unusual/ famous IP neighbors?

Harry Potter Conspiracy Theories #4

June 24, 2007 | Harry Potter

My Harry Potter Conspiracy Theory posts have gotten ridiculously popular, all receiving over 500 comments - a couple getting close to 1000. So I thought I would have one last attempt at coming up with Potter related theories.

Actually that’s a bit of a fib, I’m not going to be coming up with any. What I intend to do is write down my thoughts based upon the vast swathes of comments that have been posted on here over the last couple of years, picking out what I think are the most interesting.

RAB IS Regulus Black

There is pretty much no point having this discussion anymore. The fact that the RAB initials are different in each language, each time the B being replaced with the letter that starts the respective countries word for Black, is more than enough proof for me. Let’s move on shall we?

Dumbledore

Dumbledore IS dead. No question there. Rowling …

SEO Consultant Shimon Sandler Review

June 23, 2007 | Paid Reviews

Shimon Sandler contacted me recently asking me to do a paid review of his SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) Consultancy blog. I haven’t used his services so will be reviewing his website and my opinion of the content on his site. I am not an SEO expert (although I like to think I do ok) so hopefully I will learn a thing or two from browsing his site.

Design

The design of Shimon site is nice enough, but nothing particularly special, however for its purpose it is more than functional. Personally I would reduce the amount of borders around things since they seem to segregate the content, and I would possibly make the main navigation more prominent. Personally I would remove the extraneous sidebar stuff as well, for example I would remove the “my blog is worth x amount of dollars” thing, it has nothing to do with SEO and clutters the …

An underwater Office

June 19, 2007 | Links

Three Rings Design are a game development company in San Francisco, they make the very popular games Puzzle Pirates and Bang Howdy.

The company is run by a rather eccentric Englishman called Daniel James (see a photo of him here… he likes to wear this stuff). At work we run both Puzzle Pirates and Bang Howdy on Miniclip, and I had the pleasure of meeting Daniel a couple of years ago when Puzzle Pirates was still fairly young.

Based on what I had heard about Three Rings there are lots of things I like about their working environment. Like Miniclip they are quite relaxed, and don’t do over time/ crunch time in the way that larger companies do. They are also well known for their parties. However today Wired posted a bunch of photos of their office, and it looks like something out of a movie.

Looking at …
