Eee pc – small, light, I want one!

Asus have recently announced the Eee pc. I'm really liking the look of this one. I recently bought a laptop computer but it's quite large big and carrying it around isn't too fun so something smaller, that I can use anywhere in the house and when I go on holiday/ travelling, would be absolutely great.

It only has a 7 inch screen, and the disk drives start at 4 gig (very small) but considering the price this isn't an issue for me - It's soooo cheap. Apparently prices start at $200 (so likely £200), which is well within my range for a low end pc for web browsing & blogging - and maybe a bit of web development.

The battery life is a little short, and it's a shame there's no dvd drive, but I guess improving those would add to the weight and the cost. I have already read rumors of a 10 inch version so maybe I should wait and see if that is going to happen. Apparently English language countries are likely to get the computer as early as August this year.

The baby laptop is coming loaded with all sorts of open source goodies. In particular it will be running Linux, and have Open Office and Firefox installed. This will keep the price down and give people some decent software.

I must admit I am a little surprised that something like this hasn't been done sooner, a light weight, cheap computer that looks nice, for simple usage is bound to sell well.

  • i got one and it small and light and you can take it on hoilday with you it great

  • I never heard of the eee pc from Asus, I presume this retailed in the UK, any idea if it proved popular/a success?

Since this article though, there have been a number of other systems released that sound pretty similar to this, probably lighter in weight and of higher spec further still.

Carrying my full size notebook around with me is proving a strain on my shoulder lately so willbe looking at something such as this myself soon.

There are lots of newer computers than the EEE pc now. This one was the first real netbook, and since it came out everyone has been jumping on the bandwagon and releasing their own versions.
