A brief history of sex in video games

May 30, 2008 | Video Games

An amusing & educational look at the history of sex in video games. Sex has been around in games for almost as long as game have existed. Sure, there’s lot’s of controversy now, but really - is it needed? There’s so much more violence than sex in games, and sex is required for the survival of the human race whereas violence… isn’t.

Anyway the video is by Daniel Floyd who’s a student (not a professor) at Savannah College of Art and Design and he made this for his coursework.

How I built BenGillbanks.co.uk in a little over 2 hours

May 29, 2008 | Web Design, General

Quite some time ago I purchased BenGillbanks.co.uk thinking it would be a good idea to own my own name as a domain. But then I didn’t do anything with it.

The other day I decided it was time to sort it out so I proceeded to develop the thing.

Concept

From the start I wanted the site to be a single page, with links to all my sites and a Twitter feed. I wanted to use a dark colour scheme, and I wanted to do something more detailed, and less blocky than I normally create, whilst still keeping it clean and minimal.

My first port of call was Colorlovers.com (a great resource for the colour blind amongst us) where I did a palette search to find a colour scheme I liked. I ended up choosing the lovely Stay Blue. 10 minutes down.

I then jumped straight into my very old copy of …

Wall-E in real life

May 23, 2008 | Videos, Links

Found a video of Wall-E on Electroplankton and am loving it. This has to be the best marketing campaign ever.

Oh - and case you’ve missed it. Wall-E is the latest, soon to be hit, movie from the ridiculously clever folks at Pixar.

Wordpress themes, and assumed responsibility

May 20, 2008 | General

I’ve had a number of emails recently about an Islamic website that is using my free Wordpress theme - Regulus. People have been emailing assuming that, because I designed the theme, I am Islamic and a terrorist.

I can’t actually comment on the website as none of the emails (or blog comments!) have actually explained anything - the authors jumping straight into threats and accusations, but the fact that they have found me because of the theme and automatically accuse me without checking their facts surprises and upsets me.

This is not the first time I have been emailed about websites that use my theme, previously I have had people contact because they want to get in touch with someone using my theme who doesn’t have a contact page. Generally a short response explaining the situation is enough, but I don’t like the idea that people are jumping to these conclusions.

Star Wars Animated series

May 14, 2008 | Videos, Links

My Starwars loving side has got plenty to be happy about at the moment - the Clone Wars 3d cartoons are on their way!

I absolutely adored the 2d versions (in particular the superior 2nd series) and this trailer looks like it will ignite my passion for Starwars once more… if it hasn’t already.

According to the BBC the animated Clone Wars will kick off with a movie length version later this year, and then continue with a tv series. This, for me at least, is totally unexpected and incredibly welcome.

Since I’m on the subject, you should probably check out these mini Starwars Lego models. They are almost as cool as the Clone Wars film and tv series (some may even arguer that they’re cooler!).

The trials and tribulations of maintaining multiple websites

May 13, 2008 | General

As all 3 of my regular readers know, I run more than one website. My main ones are Binary Moon (this site), Binary Joy, Binary Sun, and Pro Theme Design. 3 of these 4 sites are blogs… and blogs need content.

I am currently finding it very hard to keep updating these sites. Binary Joy is relatively easy to sort out - there is always games news to write up. Binary Sun doesn’t need maintenance, it can take care of itself. So that leaves Binary Moon and Pro Theme Design.

Currently, on Binary Moon, I am trying to write at least one homepage post a week along with one or two link posts. Recently this hasn’t been working quite as planned but it doesn’t do too badly. Pro Theme Design on the other hand is a web design blog, but so far all the posts are about products I …
