There have been celebrities on Twitter (follow me here) for quite some time but over the last couple of weeks there has been a huge surge of them joining in the UK. I've seen Twitter mentioned on a number of tv shows, and heard it on a couple of radio stations. It's also been mentioned on some prominent UK news websites.
Apologies in advance to people outside of the UK - I am pretty sure I'll mention a fair few people you haven't heard of.
Personally I think that the first to embrace the technology in a big way was Stephen Fry, but more recently people like Philip Schofield, Boris Johnson (the mayor of London), and even the Prime Minister have helped push forward a big takeup from the British "famous person" contingent which in turn can only have increased the amount of UK Twitter users, also bringing in people who wouldn't otherwise use it.
So who's the best?
Naturally celebrities are very competitive so what better way to see who is the best than to compare the size of their Twicks... so I've put together the current top ranking for Twitter celebs in the UK according to TwickSize.com.

Rocket Boards is a super fast 3D rocket boarding action. My first "commercial" (shareware) product. Didn't do amazingly well but was a good learning experience
Bubble Bomb is a polished update of a game originally built by Warren Marshal (who works at Epic games - developers of Unreal and Gears of War)
My own update of Bubble Bomb, Bubble Blitz was almost a total rewrite adding loads of new features and a shiny new look.
Seths Puzzle Boxes is a puzzle game with a surprisingly enjoyable story line, unfortunately it's quite short so won't take long to complete, but while it lasts is great fun.

May just have to go get myself an account now. I bet Google's money hungry (evil) eyes are eyeing up Twitter as it would go as nicely with their new Latitude as pork scratchings go with ale. Very nicely.
Ha! Like all things it all comes down to the size of their... Very funny. Twitter has really caught on with the general public and thats cool as it will help diversify the twitter community. Apparently things like twitter and IM are the prime communication choice of the new generation of computer users, who think email is for dinosaurs, and only use it to communicate with "old people."
Nic - you'd better start using Twitter regularly now. The more you use it the better you realise it is
I had actually seen Obama was on Twitter (along with a whole bunch of other US celebs) but since I am English I thought it was better to write about what I know about 
Stephen - I agree entirely. I think it's great that services like Twitter are hitting the older generation. Anything that brings people closer is good in my book.

I am a big twitter fan myself but hadn't even considered that the celebrities were using it. I'm going to see how many Irish celebs are using Twitter seeing as though I am Irish myself.

Thanks for the pointer - it was the real one when I created the list as RobBrydon was an impersonator then
check out the post on July 1st where he says the account changed. I hadn't thought to check if anyones accounts had changed, but I'll update the post now.
I just checked out http://www.celebswhotwitter.com and was pretty surprised to see how many fakes are out there. It seems like the actual celebs would do more to put these down. Unless they just expect that any press is good press.
