Spiderman 3 review

May 16, 2007 | Reviews, Movies

I love the Spiderman movies. I’ve seen all three at the cinema, and own the first two on DVD - I am officially a fan. So, last weekend, I went with my girlfriend to watch the latest in the series and thought it was very cool indeed.

There are spoilers ahead so keep away if you’re worried about that sort of thing.

Spiderman 3 follows on where the second left off, with Harry Osbourne upset at Peter Parker for killing his father, Mary Jane going out with Peter, and Peter saving the day as Spidey. Things in the film happen at a crazy pace. Uncle Ben’s “real” murdered has been found and he has just escaped from prison, and some black gunk has fallen from the sky and seems to be hunting down Peter.

There is absolutely loads going on, I wonder if it’s too much, but it’s pretty easy to follow …

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

May 11, 2007 | Reviews, Movies

This is rather late now but I really wanted to say something. I mentioned before that I had seen the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film (actually called TMNT) and I’m pleased to say it was absolutely great.

I went to see the film on a weekday, and it was mostly younger children in the audience. I went with my girlfriend who very kindly puts up with my childish tendencies. I loved the film but she was very clearly bored - so Jo - thanks for putting up with me, and sorry for taking you to see the film.

The story itself picks up a few years after the Ninja Turtles movies, cartoons and everything else. Shredder has been removed, and the turtles are now at a loose end. They are all doing different things to pass the time but mostly they have simply lost their way. Then some evil …

300 + Paulo = Xerxes?

April 5, 2007 | Reviews, Movies

I went to see 300 at the Imax cinema in London recently and it is one of the best films I have seen in a long time. I like powerful films and, whilst the story was a little thin, this film was VERY powerful.

Nobody goes to see a film like 300 for the story, but what there was of it was done more than well enough. For those who aren’t aware (and I’m late to the party so you must have read about it elsewhere) 300 covers the battle of Thermapolae in which 300 Spartans stood again the millions of the Persian army.

This film is pure popcorn fantasy - it’s wonderful to look at and, like Sin City before it, follows it’s source material, a comic book by Frank Miller, very closely. Also like Sin City the movie was filmed largely on Blue Screen with the …

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) movie - competition

March 14, 2007 | Movies

I was recently contacted by a very nice lady at Warner Bros. asking whether I would like to run a competition to promote a film. Normally I just ignore this sort of thing but (not that it happens very often!) but being that it’s for the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, I just had to say yes.

Like 300 (also from Warner Brothers) I have been excited about this film for some time now. I have loved the Ninja Turtles cartoon and toys, and now the new film is announced and it looks like it will be great fun. There is also a game to accompany the film which, based upon the limited time I’ve played it, is equally cool.

Unlike the first movie (technically there were 3, but the sequels don’t really count) the latest Ninja Turtles film is entirely computer generated which has given the producers …

Hot Fuzz

March 4, 2007 | Movies

I went to see the new British comedy, Hot Fuzz, the other day - and it was absolutely great.

I haven’t seen Shaun of the Dead, despite hearing that it’s really rather good, but that didn’t stop me from wanting to see this film. From what I have heard the humor and the style of the two films are fairly similar and having now seen Hot Fuzz I think I will give it a go.

I was very surprised by the levels of blood and gore in the film but it was all suitably b movie style with plenty of comic over the topness that stops you from taking it all too seriously - and to cut this post incredibly short I loved it!

Simon Pegg isn’t the sort of actor you would normally associate with an action hero role but he plays his role, as Sergeant Nicholas Angel (Angle?), …

Eragon - all pervasive

December 6, 2006 | Movies, Video Games

I read the first two Eragon books recently, the third and final is currently being written. My timing seems to have been quite good because as I was reading the second book, I found out that there was a film being made… and then there are the inevitable video games. Now on the company I work at are running ads for Eragon on our website. It’s everywhere!

The youth of Christopher Paolini, the author, and the success it has achieved are astounding. Christopher was 15 when he graduated from school and started the first book, and 18 when he started the second. The book was self published by his parents, and is now being turned into a movie (released next week) and video games for pretty much every game format.

The first of the series, Eragon, has been criticised as being a little formulaic and derivative but I …
