Run, Fat boy, Run

October 25, 2007 | Reviews, Movies

Went to see Run, Fat boy, Run at the cinema the other day. It was really good.

I’ve become a bit of a fan of Simon Pegg, Hot Fuzz being one of the big reasons why. Somehow he has made being a geek quite cool, and that can only be a good thing. However if you go into Run Fatboy Run expecting something like Hot Fuzz or Shaun of the Dead then you are likely to be rather disappointed.

Run, Fat boy, Run is a much straighter comedy than either of those, the jokes are more traditional and the story is almost normal, realistic even. That said there are still some classic Simon Pegg moments (the blister) and a handful of cameos from English comedians (”Can you give me something in the shape of a fish?”).

The story is reasonably generic, a man loves a lady but can’t commit - ditching …

Ben’s Brother and Alice McLaughlin

October 3, 2007 | Entertainment

I’ve been rather busy with another project recently (more on that soon) so I didn’t get a chance to post this in a timely manner. What happenend is a couple of weeks ago I went to see Ben’s Brother at the Norwich Arts Centre. It was actually the groups last gig from their first headlining tour.

They’re a relatively new group - although that’s not entirely fair as they’ve been around for a while - it’s just that they have only recently gotten their big break. The front man - the titular Ben’s Brother (who’s actually called Jamie) - has been writing and performing for years, including penning songs for Will Young, and Natalie Imbruglia.

The first I had heard of this group was when my girlfriend emailed me to tell me she’d just bought tickets for us to see them - so I headed over to itunes to have a …

The Simpsons Movie

September 6, 2007 | Reviews, Movies

I saw the Simpsons movie recently and I must say - I enjoyed it. A lot.

Going in to it I was concerned that it would be like watching three episodes back to back, and I had seen some reviews on tv where they said it was just that, but once the credits started to roll I felt I had watched a fully fledged movie - and an enjoyable one at that.

The basic premise of the story is clearly inspired by the tv series. In short the story is… Homer does something disastrously wrong… then fixes it.

Along the way you bump into all the major (and many minor) characters from the last 20 years of cartoons, and you even get to find out where Springfield is located… kinda.

I liked the way the story started off like a normal episode and then grew to a full fledged narrative of it’s own …

Harry Potter - unanswered questions answered

August 12, 2007 | Harry Potter

The book has been out a couple of weeks now and, based upon the comments I’ve read there are still some questions people want answered. Therefore I have collected together my thoughts, along with those of others (thanks to the commenters on the previous posts).

I should point out that this post contains plenty of spoilers so if you haven’t read the book yet you should turn away now!

As an aside, for those who haven’t seen it, there is also a transcript of an interview available where JK goes over the post Deathly Hallows stuff. She talks about the lead characters and what they do with their lives, clearing up a lot of the issues people had with the epilogue. Personally I think it would have been nice if more of this was mentioned in the book itself.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Review

July 22, 2007 | Reviews, Harry Potter

Well, it took me all day but I managed it. I had to get some sleep before writing this but here I am letting you know what I think.

Story

The story was unusual - it was very different to the first 6 in that Hogwarts, and a lot of the characters, were only mentioned briefly. In fact it was all a bit of a mystery as Harry, Ron and Hermione all rush around trying to solve the mystery of the Horcruxes and the titular Deathly Hallows.

It all starts off at a terrifying pace, there’s an evil meeting, and then Harry leaves the Dursleys for the final time. There are a number of deaths in the first few chapters, at least a couple of which will surprise (they surprised me at least). After the third chapter things slow down for a while as we are reintroduced to some of the characters and …

Ratatouille Review: Part 2

July 20, 2007 | Reviews, Movies

From Wikipedia

French ratatouille may be served as a meal on its own (accompanied by rice, potatoes, or simple French bread), or as a side dish. Tomatoes are a key ingredient, with garlic, onions, zucchini (courgettes), eggplant (aubergine), bell peppers (capsicum), some herbes de Provence, and sometimes basil. All the ingredients are sautéed in olive oil.

Ratatouille is sometimes used as a filling for savoury crepes.

As well as a tasty food stuff, Ratatouille is a delicious combination of all the treats Pixar can bring to the table. With every film they use all their knowledge and skill to make a wonderful story. It’s becoming a cliche now, someone says it with the release of every film, but Pixar are, first and foremost, story tellers. They use their fantastic technical knowledge to bring to life lovely, beautifully realised characters but the focus is always the story.

Ratatouille has an unusual premise …
