Last week I got tagged by Gnorb. I was going to write something clever about how I normally turn these things down because everyone does it and they’re so passé… but to be honest I’m flattered to even be considered, and I haven’t seen a meme in months - so here goes.
I have to tell you seven random peices of information (that you may not know) about myself.
Despite all the violent video games I play and martial arts films I watch… I’m a pacifist.
I read books. A lot of them. I love epic fantasy (Robin Hobb, George RR Martin etc) and get through 2 or 3 books a month
Before becoming a web designer I studied 3d art at university with a view to becoming a video game artist… but nobody wanted me
I am an Atheist
I am a big kid. I’m approaching adulthood (getting close to 30) but still …

My outlook on life is quite liberal. In general I am happy for people to do whatever they like, as long as it doesn’t affect others in a negative way.
However smoking is something I am very much against. To start with, the whole idea of smoking just doesn’t appeal to me. I have never smoked… and I never will. More importantly I have seen the effects of excessive smoking - about a year ago my Grandfather had one of his legs amputated in part due to smoking.
This new advert from an Anti Smoking group in Florida gets the message across in a mildly amusing way that is more likely to be noticed by teens - the likely target audience.
As a piece of marketing this is great. Visually it looks like many games out there now (the HALO series in particular) and you have no idea what the message is until …
A fantastic house designed by an incredibly creative person. It all started because a rich bloke, Steven B. Klinsky, wanted his house redesigned and asked an architect, Eric Clough, to embed a poem in his childrens bedroom. A year goes by and suddenly a new house has been made, with a complex series of puzzles waiting for the occupants to unlock the secrets within.
But some of that furniture and some of those walls conceal secrets — messages, games and treasures — that make up a Rube Goldberg maze of systems and contraptions conceived by a young architectural designer named Eric Clough, whose ideas about space and domestic living derive more from Buckminster Fuller than Peter Marino.
The apartment even comes with its own book, part of which is a fictional narrative that recalls “The Da Vinci Code” (without the funky religion or buckets of blood)

Quite some time ago I purchased BenGillbanks.co.uk thinking it would be a good idea to own my own name as a domain. But then I didn’t do anything with it.
The other day I decided it was time to sort it out so I proceeded to develop the thing.
Concept
From the start I wanted the site to be a single page, with links to all my sites and a Twitter feed. I wanted to use a dark colour scheme, and I wanted to do something more detailed, and less blocky than I normally create, whilst still keeping it clean and minimal.
My first port of call was Colorlovers.com (a great resource for the colour blind amongst us) where I did a palette search to find a colour scheme I liked. I ended up choosing the lovely Stay Blue. 10 minutes down.
I then jumped straight into my very old copy of …

I’ve had a number of emails recently about an Islamic website that is using my free Wordpress theme - Regulus. People have been emailing assuming that, because I designed the theme, I am Islamic and a terrorist.
I can’t actually comment on the website as none of the emails (or blog comments!) have actually explained anything - the authors jumping straight into threats and accusations, but the fact that they have found me because of the theme and automatically accuse me without checking their facts surprises and upsets me.
This is not the first time I have been emailed about websites that use my theme, previously I have had people contact because they want to get in touch with someone using my theme who doesn’t have a contact page. Generally a short response explaining the situation is enough, but I don’t like the idea that people are jumping to these conclusions.
For …

As all 3 of my regular readers know, I run more than one website. My main ones are Binary Moon (this site), Binary Joy, Binary Sun, and Pro Theme Design. 3 of these 4 sites are blogs… and blogs need content.
I am currently finding it very hard to keep updating these sites. Binary Joy is relatively easy to sort out - there is always games news to write up. Binary Sun doesn’t need maintenance, it can take care of itself. So that leaves Binary Moon and Pro Theme Design.
Currently, on Binary Moon, I am trying to write at least one homepage post a week along with one or two link posts. Recently this hasn’t been working quite as planned but it doesn’t do too badly. Pro Theme Design on the other hand is a web design blog, but so far all the posts are about products I …
