Elemental Development (aka what I’m doing at the moment)

June 7, 2009 | Elemental, General

Earlier this year I said I was ‘back in the swing‘, posted a few times, and then vanished.

The reason isn’t that I have nothing to say (although I have less than I used too) but that I am in the middle of redesigning this website… which will also include a server move. I moved over all the files and databases about 2 or 3 weeks ago, and now I don’t want to have to update everything again.

Unfortunately I can’t leave Binary Moon empty for this long without posting something so I thought I’d talk a bit about what I am working on and the development of the new version Binary Moon.

Development

To cut a long story short the new design is actually going to be a ‘child theme‘ of my own WordPress framework - and it’s a bit of a beast.

Named Elemental, I started development about 6 months ago. …

5 reasons why I don’t follow you on Twitter

April 22, 2009 | General

I have a fair few people following me on Twitter. It’s not as many as some Twitter users but it’s enough to make me feel a little bit special - after all I don’t know all my followers.

Because there are so many people following me I thought I should explain why I don’t neccessarily follow you back automatically.

Why I don’t follow you on Twitter

  • Your profile is incomplete. If your description empty or you haven’t listed a website then I won’t know what you do or who you are. Give me a reason to follow you and I will be more likely to say hi some time.
  • You don’t tweet (primarily) in English. I recently had some one send a tweet to me saying goodbye. He was upset that I hadn’t followed him back… But all his tweets were in Spanish - if I can’t understand you there’s no point me …
  • The future of WordPress themes

    March 29, 2009 | General

A couple of weeks ago there was quite a lot of talk within the WordPress themes community about the future of WordPress. Ian Stewart started it, and then it spread around the blogosphere… so I thought I’d offer my rather late tuppence worth.

First a quick round up of the current posts:

    My thoughts

The current argument is revolving around theme frameworks. Many people think this is where things are heading - and there are a few who disagree.

As I said in a comment on Adiis blog (and others seem to agree), I think people are approaching this from different angles. Adii looks at things purely from his perspective, his end users are the people he sells themes to, and most people who buy themes …

Goodbye to blogging (as we know it)

    March 22, 2009 | General

As with all things, blogging is evolving. I mentioned a year or two about how the popular blogs are becoming more like websites - and the current trend of magazine themes is making this ever more real… and I think they will change even more.

The way I see it there are three main changes taking place.

    1. Twitter

Twitter has recently exploded onto an unsuspecting public, I’ve even blogged about it a couple of times and there are many who do nothing but talk about it.

What used to be the home of the technically advanced and the early adopters is now being used by anyone and everyone. You know something is up when the mayor of London and the president of the USA have accounts.

For me Twitter has taken the place of link posts. It gives me a quick and easy way to show off stuff I think is …

    Bolt

    March 2, 2009 | General

Disneys latest animated adventure, Bolt, was recently released in the UK. It’s been a busy 6 months for me so I thought I’d take some time off and check it out. To be honest I wish I had more time to go to the cinema but it’s hard finding films that both Jo and I want to see, but Bolt seemed like some light hearted fun that we could both enjoy.

Bolt is a dog - a “super” talented one. He’s actually a dog who has been brainwashed into thinking he’s been genetically modified and so has super powers - lazer vision, super bark, super strength etc.

Bolts life is not dissimilar to Truman Burbanks from The Truman Show. He lives in a television recording studio that is carefully controlled so that he thinks it’s real. Special effects and camera teams work together to ensure his emotions are real. So, …

Hints and tips for Twitter noobs (and celebs)

    February 26, 2009 | General

After my recent post on celebs and Twitter a few of my real life friends signed up - and a couple of others asked what on earth I was talking about and why they should care so I thought I’d put together a short intro to Twitter.

    1. What and why

Twitter is a relatively new form of communication with a simple premise. It’s used to tell people “What am I doing now?”

Explaining why it’s popular is harder - I can’t explain why I do it… I just do. It’s one of those things you have to tyr (and I mean properly try) in order to understand it.

    2. How

I think many people use the online Twitter interface for their tweeting purely because they don’t realise the possibilities.

There are a plethora of applications around for updating Twitter. Most available on your desktop are developed in Adobe Air, which is a software plugin. …
