In the workplace

March 29, 2008 | General

37Signals have recently posted a couple of articles on improving the workplace experience and they’re doing things I can only dream of. The posts in questions are workplace experiments, and fire the workaholics.

Workplace experiments

Some of their ideas are great. I love the idea of a 4 day work week (and I’m not the only one). The fact they have studied it and found that the shortened work time results in the same amount of work being completed is particularly interesting.

I must admit I think they’re a bit crazy giving each of their staff an unlimited credit card, but in a tight knit company I an see how that would work. Miniclip doesn’t do things to quit such an extreme but if you need anything work related (books, software, hardware etc) then they are happy to buy it, so I guess it’s not too different.

Pro Theme Design and Mimbo Pro

March 12, 2008 | Web Design, General

The last couple of months I have been spending my free time working on a new website and premium theme.

The website is called Pro Theme Design, and the theme is Mimbo Pro.

Pro Theme Design

Pro Theme Design is a Wordpress theme blog and premium theme store. You will be able to purchase premium themes and read tips on developing themes all in one spot. Yes, there’s paid stuff but I also intend to give away freebies, for example I have also created an icon set, which I will be distributing via Pro Theme Design.

Mimbo Pro

At the start of the year I knew I would be making the Pro Theme Design website, and I thought it would be cool to work with other developers on the themes. The first person I thought to contact was Darren Hoyt, the developer of incredibly successful Mimbo.

We have been working together …

EEE PC and me

March 6, 2008 | General

I bought an EEE PC the other day, and so far am very impressed.

These little machines are very small, and very handy and, most impressively, very cheap. They’ve been around for about 5/6 months now but, in the UK at least, are very hard to get hold of. Thankfully I found out about a shipment to a store in Tottenham Court Road - London, and ran off to get one almost straight away.

The machine itself is a 900Mhz Celeron with 512 Meg of RAM, running Linux (Xandros to be precise). Asus, the machines creators, designed a custom interface for the OS but being Linux it’s easy to get around and I was soon running a full blown version of KDE. I’m a bit green when it comes to Linux, I’m a lot happier with Windows, but I figured I’d give it a go as it could be a …

Happy Holidays - California

February 17, 2008 | Travel

My girlfriend Jo and I have recently (actually… 2 weeks ago - I’ve been too busy to write it up :-S) gotten back from a holiday in California, which is last months excuse for the lack of posts on my blogs. The primary purpose of the trip was to go to a science conference for Jo’s PhD which was held in San Diego, but we decided to hang around for a few extra days and enjoy the sights.

Once the conference was over we went into Downtown San Diego, Little Italy to be precise, where we spent 4 days seeing the sights (highlights included Sea World and the San Diego zoo). Then for the last two days of the holiday we moved slightly north to Anaheim to spend a couple of days at Disneyland.

Based upon my own experience I would recommend that anyone interested in Disneyland (or world) would be advised …

Athlete at Norwich LCR

October 19, 2007 | Reviews, General

Shortly before we went to see Damien Rice my girlfriend bought tickets for us to go and see Athlete at the Norwich UEA LCR (University of East Anglia LCR… don’t know what the last bit means). Last night it was finally time to go see them, and we had a great time.

It was actually part of the UK tour for their new album, Beyond the Neighbourhood and naturally I hadn’t listened to it, so I spent the whole day with it playing on a loop. Jo got home from work at 6 and we had a crazy rush to eat and get dressed so we could get there in time for the doors opening… and it’s a good job we did. The venue was, what some would call cosy. Thankfully getting there early meant we were able to get a pretty decent view.

Roll - Flash Game

October 12, 2007 | General

My blogging has been rather slow for the last few weeks. I have a number of small posts lined up for publishing but haven’t had the time to finish any of them. Thankfully it hasn’t just been laziness - I have actually been doing something.

I’ve been making a game in Adobe Flash.

The Reason

I decided to make the game when I saw a game development competition over on Jayisgames.com. I’ve read the site for the last couple of years and have seen all of the dev competitions they have held. Unfortunately the themes didn’t interest me and the deadlines were too short - however this time they had a cool theme (ball physics) and 2 months to make the game in. I decided to try out.

The prize for the competition is a full version of Flash CS3 and $2500, but there were other reasons for entering. I …
