How I built BenGillbanks.co.uk in a little over 2 hours
Quite some time ago I purchased BenGillbanks.co.uk thinking it would be a good idea to own my own name as a domain. But then I didn't do anything with it.
The other day I decided it was time to sort it out so I proceeded to develop the thing.
ConceptFrom the start I wanted the site to be a single page, with links to all my sites and a Twitter feed. I wanted to use a dark colour scheme, and I ...
WordPress themes, and assumed responsibility
I've had a number of emails recently about an Islamic website that is using my free WordPress theme - Regulus. People have been emailing assuming that, because I designed the theme, I am Islamic and a terrorist.
I can't actually comment on the website as none of the emails (or blog comments!) have actually explained anything - the authors jumping straight into threats and accusations, but the fact that they have found me because of the theme and automatically accuse ...
The trials and tribulations of maintaining multiple websites
As all 3 of my regular readers know, I run more than one website. My main ones are Binary Moon (this site), Binary Joy, Binary Sun, and Pro Theme Design. 3 of these 4 sites are blogs... and blogs need content.
I am currently finding it very hard to keep updating these sites. Binary Joy is relatively easy to sort out - there is always games news to write up. Binary Sun doesn't need maintenance, it can take ...
Twitter me this
Unfortunately I have been dragged down into the world of Twitter. Twitter is a web app that enables people to talk rubbish at no-one in particular and then receive a response from someone they don't know. I've never seen the point of it before. I don't care that you've just eaten a croissant, or that you're about to go to bed, but now that I've been using it for a few days I am slowly coming to understand the ...
In the workplace
37Signals have recently posted a couple of articles on improving the workplace experience and they're doing things I can only dream of. The posts in questions are workplace experiments, and fire the workaholics.
Workplace experimentsSome of their ideas are great. I love the idea of a 4 day work week (and I'm not the only one). The fact they have studied it and found that the shortened work time results in the same amount of work being completed ...
Pro Theme Design and Mimbo Pro
The last couple of months I have been spending my free time working on a new website and premium theme.
The website is called Pro Theme Design, and the theme is Mimbo Pro.
Pro Theme DesignPro Theme Design is a WordPress theme blog and premium theme store. You will be able to purchase premium themes and read tips on developing themes all in one spot. Yes, there's paid stuff but I also intend to give away freebies, for example ...
EEE PC and me
I bought an EEE PC the other day, and so far am very impressed.
These little machines are very small, and very handy and, most impressively, very cheap. They've been around for about 5/6 months now but, in the UK at least, are very hard to get hold of. Thankfully I found out about a shipment to a store in Tottenham Court Road - London, and ran off to get one almost straight away.
The machine ...
Happy Holidays – California
My girlfriend Jo and I have recently (actually... 2 weeks ago - I've been too busy to write it up :-S) gotten back from a holiday in California, which is last months excuse for the lack of posts on my blogs. The primary purpose of the trip was to go to a science conference for Jo's PhD which was held in San Diego, but we decided to hang around for a few extra days and enjoy the sights.
Once the conference ...
