New 9rules launches
Just a quickie to let you know that the new version of the 9rules website (codename Ali2) has been launched.
I've been a member of 9rules for a couple of years now and have nothing but good things to say about them. The people over there are great, and this update turns the site into even more of a community.
Aside from the visual updates there are now ...
Inspirational speech
This has done the rounds a bit lately but it really is inspirational so I had to publish it again. A US Computer Science professor, Randy Pausch has recently completed one of his last lectures (maybe THE last). He has a terminal illness, with only a few months left to live, and talks openly about how he feels. You have to see it to understand but it really is inspiring stuff. The things this man has accomplished are amazing, and ...
UnJUSTIFY text on other peoples websites
Anyone else get wound up by justified text?
It's not always a problem but there are times when I notice it, and it makes things harder to read. Something to change the text to left justified (as it should be IMO) would be so handy... and now Joe Lencioni has come up with a simple bookmarklet, named Unjustify, that does just that.
Check it out over at ShiftingPixel.
By the way... Joe takes some pretty good photos too.
Flash 10 – first info
The first info about the new Flash player (version 10) was released at the Adobe Max event yesterday. The features they displayed are right to left text (and other text enhancements), basic 3d abilities, and programmable effects (not dissimilar to shaders in 3d engines).
Aral Balkan (flash developer and amateur camera man) filmed the event and uploaded it to Youtube so you can see the demos for yourself.
Star Wars – Reverse References
A collection of references, some obvious, others less so on the influences of Star Wars. A rather interesting read.
Concentrating on influences or references utilized in films based solely on the Star Wars saga doesn't paint a whole reference picture. Some people may be surprised that Lucas borrowed so many elements from the past. But, anyone who watches films or reads books, all genres and generations, realizes that there is nothing new in the world. We repeat ...
LeechBlock – Firefox productivity extension
Just been pointed to a rather nice little Firefox addons called Leechblock by a post over on Blog Clout.
LeechBlock is a simple productivity tool designed to block those time-wasting sites that can suck the life out of your working day. All you need to do is specify which sites to block and when to block them.
The idea of the extension is that you can block groups of sites for specified periods of time - either an amount of time ...
Real 3d Holographics
An Italian friend of mine showed this to me recently - some 3d visualisation technology (or whatever you call it). Unfortunately I don't speak the language so my friend did the translation for me so, in the likely event that you don't speak Italian, I have added the transcript below.
Look at this thing. It's really cool. It's like Star Wars... only real!!!
Watch the video and be amazed - I'm looking forward to seeing future versions of it.
Get $25 for free with Auction Ads
I have finally decided to give Auction Ads a go. At first I was sceptical as I couldn't see that many people would actually spend any money following ebay links. To tell the truth I'm still sceptical but the recent offer to give people $25 just for signing up prompted me into action.
Apparently Auction Ads work best when they are on niche/ focused sites, so Binary Joy having an audience of gamers, should be ideal... I hope. Initially ...
