Robot Fighting

December 14, 2007 | Videos, Links

A bit of something different for the weekend - robots beating each other up. The future is now!

Spoilers…

I love that the tiny robot beats the big one - bigger isn’t always better :) The moves they pull off are pretty cool too. I just hope they don’t start giving these things pointy weapons and artificial intelligence, else it’ll be the start of the Terminator movies.

Minority Report a reality?

November 16, 2007 | Videos, Links

Q. What do you get if you cross a Nintendo Wii, with an LED array?
A. A scene from Minority Report… in your own home.

There’s not much to write about here - it’s all explained in the video below.

I would love to have something like this on the Wii for real. I’m surprised they managed to get two points, multi input, working as well. I’d have thought that needed changes to the Wii’s hardware to work.

Scientists, Tesla coils, and Super Mario

This is a major geek out but it combines science and video games. I have no idea how they did this buy I am incredibly impressed.

Thanks to Tranism from Electroplankton for the heads up.

His Dark Materials

November 2, 2007 | Videos

In the trailers before Stardust we saw the trailer for the Golden Compass (known to Brits as Northern Lights), the (first?) movie of the first book from the ‘His Dark Materials’ trilogy by Philip Pullman.

I was already quite interested in the film, and finding out that Weta (think Lord of the Rings trilogy) are doing the special effects makes me even more so.

The comments on the Youtube post are showing some concern about the content of the book - all related to religion. However according to imdb and Wikipedia the film has been tweaked to remove references to religion. Personally I don’t care, the trailer looks great and I hope it does justice to the books.

Top Gear - 1964 Peel P50

October 31, 2007 | Videos

Anyone else see this on Sundays episode of Top Gear. We got to talking about it in the office today so I thought I would look it up and post it here. Basically Jeremy Clarkson tries out the 1964 Peel P50. It’s not the type of high end sports car they normally feature but he seems to love it… and I laughed all the way through the entire thing. In fact watching it again just now set me off all over again.

I’ve said it before and no doubt will say it again, but I am not into cars. They serve a purpose and that’s it, but Top Gear never fails to amuse my childish sensibilities.

Wall-E from Pixar

October 16, 2007 | Videos, Links

The similarities with Johnny 5 are obvious but I don’t care - and I always loved that film (Short Circuit) anyway.

I also think that Pixar are one of the best film studios in the world. Their movies have a sense of heart and feeling that others can’t touch.

More info on Wall-E is available at IMDB.
