Blobcat Game: Post Holiday Update

So – it’s now after the holidays and I’m back at the day job – and I’m pleased to say I was able to do some good work on Blobcat over the break and the game is coming together rather nicely.

Some of the highlights include:

  • adding animations and eye movements to the Blobcat. In my opinion this has made a big difference to how he feels
  • made the Blobcat move around more. He rotates when moving left and right – and he moves away from his protector when shooting – which adds extra movement in the background and a better sense of control for the game player.
  • added damage particles (which need replacing).
  • added different facial expressions which show the level of damage (more will be done with this)
  • changed the enemy graphics. These will be redone entirely – but now they show which direction they are travelling from.
  • started work on the upgrades screen. This isn’t in the video – and it’s something I wanted to get further on. But it’s nice that it exists and is loading some content. The upgrades screen will be used to upgrade your weaponry so that you can beat the harder levels.

I should add a shout out to TexturePacker as well. The Blobcat in the game is made up on a series of layers of different graphical assets so that I can animate and swap them, and this is all controlled by the very cool TexturePacker app. Well worth a look for game developers – and I suspect it would be handy for web designers too!

Let me know what you think on Mastodon, or BlueSky (or Twitter X if you must).
