Dogfooding a New WordPress Design

Eating your own dog food, also called dogfooding, is a slang term used to reference a scenario in which a company uses its own product to test and promote the product. Wikipedia – Dogfooding

This is another thing on the long list of things I’ve been thinking about trying for a while. I have recently replaced the design here on Binary Moon with that of my latest theme – Carmack. The theme is currently only available on WordPress.com – but I am planning to release it for self hosted users eventually.

The beauty of Dogfooding my new themes is that I can test them with real content. Testing them with dummy data is good, but there’s something about using it in a real situation that makes a big difference. I’ve already tweaked a couple of elements to make it work even better.

My plan is that each time I publish a new theme on wordpress.com I will switch to it here. I can then test the setup process and see how other users switching to the theme would use it.

About Carmack

Carmack is a magazine theme inspired by Motorsports magazines. Carmack has support for custom post formats which makes the site more interactive. You can see an example of this on the homepage with the Legend of Zelda post displaying the game trailer. It also supports projects (note to self – update existing projects, and add the rest of my projects).

Let me know what you think on Mastodon, or BlueSky (or Twitter X if you must).
