YouTube videos at the speed of podcasts.
I often watch tutorials on YouTube, but I’m also impatient. To save time I like to watch them at 2x speed – as is commonplace with podcasts and audiobooks. It takes a bit of getting used to but you can get through a lot very quickly when you speed things up. But often I feel that 2x isn’t enough. I could save even more time if it went quicker.
Enter the YouTube Playback speed chrome extension. A couple of days ago someone on my Twitter timeline shared this and it’s changed my YouTube viewing habits forever. Now all the 1 hour plus videos I had been putting off because I couldn’t commit to watching them in one go have been watched! It’s brilliant.
Obviously there’s times when this isn’t appropriate, but for content where you want to consume and move on? It’s worked perfectly for me!

A few years back I had the same itch. I solved it with making a Bookmarklet that allowed text entry for the speed you wanted. 0.5 — 2.5 etc. Assuming the code below doesn’t get wiped out, you just put this into the address field of a bookmark. Save it and go to YT and then open the bookmarklet. I opens a dialog and you enter the numeric value to speed up or slow down your currently playing video. Should work in Chrome, Firefox and Safari.
Hey Kel – thanks for the bookmarklet. I didn’t even realise something like that was possible!
Also, just today I was introduced to this gem. Allows variable speed live speed changes 0.25 up to 16x. Find the perfect speed for those slow talkers 🙂
