I have recently been looking into Lego for a project I am working on, and have come to realise that I still really really like it. Despite being 28 Lego still has the same sense of fun it had when I was 5 and I got to thinking about why.
Below are some of the reasons why I think Lego is such an awesome form of entertainment.
As I mentioned above, I still really like Lego. Perhaps it’s because I am more technically minded (geeky) but Lego still appeals to me. Admittedly my main interest now is the “more grown up” Lego Technic, but I still like the traditional sets just as much – there’s something about building Star Wars vehicles that makes the geek inside cry out in joy; whoever thought of combining Star Wars with Lego deserves a medal!
This is something I feel quite strongly about. Being a very creative person (ie I like to make stuff) I have had many many hours of fun making new things with Lego. I tend not to do that so much anymore but I am still amazed by some of the things that are made, and these people clearly didn’t follow the instructions in a set…
For example I recently mentioned a couple of robots that were made with Lego – namely Johnny 5 and Wall-E
Lego is immensely versatile. Buy a single set and you will be able to make stacks of different models. Where one day you are making a castle, the next you can make a space station, and then take things apart and start all over again.
On a similar note Lego doesn’t age. The sets I had when I was young are still perfectly good and can be added to newer sets seamlessly. Perfect for people stuck in the current credit crunch – and green as well – you can recycle your old Lego for generations!
Lego is educational; it teaches simple mechanics (in particular with Lego Technic) and, as I mentioned above, encourages creativity. If you get Lego Mindstorms then it becomes even more educational teaching very basic robotics and programming. All things any geek would love to know, or encourage their children to learn.
If you don’t believe it’s educational then check out this lego production line that creates toy cars to order.
Lego is accessible to anyone and everyone. Anybody can pick up a Lego brick and stick it to another Lego brick. 99% of people can follow Lego instructions, which is good training for Ikea when they grow up. That said to be able design your own models and have them reach as high a standard as the sets you buy takes a lot of time to learn (I bet this aircraft carrier took a while to work out).
Easy to learn, hard to master.
I suspect that this one is mostly for the Dad’s out there but buying, and playing with, Lego is very much a family activity. Being able to buy a toy like this and then build it together is great fun – I remember doing this sort of thing with my own father, and hope I can do the same when I have a family of my own.
I asked a few of my friends for their opinions about the awesomeness that is Lego and this is what I got back…
Are there any reasons it’s awesome that I’ve missed? What are your thoughts about Lego?
Banji – I did consider affiliate links 🙂
Thanks for the extra reasons too – I like number 2
Nicely done… If you put an affiliate link to buy Lego, I might have own one right now 🙂 These are a few other reasons personally for me.
1) It’s like art, only 3D
2) Everyone is smiling, you can’t help but smile too
3) The satisfaction of seeing the end result. And the joy of starting over
Lego Land!! 😀
I love lego too
I agree with your points, Lego’s rock! I’m so glad that they are still a classic toy in todays world!
I’ve fond memories of Lego. My son now grown up used to spend hours and hours making all kinds of things. His best ever was a Galleon.
Completely agree. I don’t have any lego anymore, passed it on to my cousins, I did feel a little uneasy at giving away my lego to be honest. I might treat myself this Christmas!
Completely agree. Had a good time with thoose little things
hmm, nice toys…..but i wonder if my 1,5 years kid could plays those things……….
I have grandchildren now and kept ALL of the Lego of my ‘5’ children. I cannot wait to sit and build houses and other things. I have VERY nice memories playing with my children on a rainy day 😉
Legos are absolutely classic! Many a weekend at college was “wasted” building giant buildings in the dorm room with friends 😀
Yeah, You’re 100% correct! Lego is really the best toy ever! I’ve spent so many years with this cool and clever toy when I was a little boy! And few month ago, I found big box with all my Lego at home and I was surprised, how easy I spent next few hours by playing with it again 🙂 I think this box will never leave my home 🙂
Having grown up with LEGO, then Technic LEGO building cars and trucks, it’s the minifigures that I now like most. With the old classic figures and the newer themed sets, you have every excuse to be a big kid again.
I love the minifigs too. I ended up getting the whole of the series one collection. A crazy waste of money – don’t think I will be able to do that for every series, but it was good fun getting these ones 🙂
Lego bricks are fantastic for developing child creativity. Also they give you the opportunity to spend quality time with your kids playing together and building something new every time. My kids love them!
Cheers!
Wow completely agree about the minifigures and all the creativity I really hope it is still going when my kids grow up so we can build some LEGO!
Lego never cease to amaze me on how awesome they are. No#1 perfect toy EVER!
I personally think that there is, has never been a better toy.
LEGO should win life time achievement award. Its fun, creative
colourful, enginuitive and completely engaging. I’m 34 and I still
get a thrill from things i can build with lego.
I can’t think of any other Toy that has left such a profound mark on so many.
My son is just starting to love lego and it brings tears to my eyes.
One off the true great inventions in our world.
childhood is so precious
Thank you LEGO

Totally agreed 🙂
I’m 32 now and still buy and build Lego. And i don’t have any children I can use as an excuse (although I sometimes pretend I do :))
In my time kids were used to play with Lego. Now kids want to play computer games sad really. But I Would surely prefer this one for mine.
I’m only 10 and I play with every kind of lego every now and then 😀
yeah lego rock lego to some peope is geeky but relly its relly amazing seein the end result
Yes. Lego is by far the best toy for kids as well as adults. Fun and Engaging.
( I still play with Lego 😛 )
It’s amazing how people don’t outgrow their love for Lego! My reasons
I cant put it down, it gets my creative mind flowing
I find it awfully relaxing, even at my ripe old age of 66
Hey Douglass – I couldn’t agree more. I’m 37 now and haven’t stopped buying the stuff. Plus since writing this I have become a dad, so I have even more reason to fill my house with little plastic bricks 🙂
They are good reasons
Awesome! Ole Kirk Christiansen is a geniues!
I can’t even explain how Legos are fun because they are just to fun!!!!!!!!!
Lego is awesome!!!
I never understood LEGO sets/kits. For exactly the reasons you describe that LEGO is so great. Where’s the creativity in following instructions to put something together? How is LEGO Millennium Falcon anything more than a 3D jigsaw puzzle?
But some people love Jigsaw puzzles! ?
